Canggu is Bigger Than You Think

coastal zone divided into distinct areas, each with its own personality, its own beach, and its
own community. The distance between one end and the other is not far as the crow flies, but
navigating between them by car can take anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes depending on traffic
and road layout.
The good news is that within each area, everything is walkable. And along the beach at most
tides, you can stroll between the main sections in as little as ten minutes. Canggu rewards
families who choose their area thoughtfully and settle in — rather than trying to cover it all.
The Three Main Areas
Berawa
Berewa sits closest to Seminyak and has a slightly more relaxed, settled pace than the rest of
Canggu. It is home to Finns Beach Club — though it is worth noting that Finns skews more
towards an adult atmosphere, so it is not the family beach club day out some might expect. The
surrounding area more than makes up for it — Berewa has a great selection of family-friendly
cafes, beautiful villa options, and a generally quieter, more unhurried energy that suits younger
families and those after a slower pace particularly well.
Batubolong and Echo Beach
Batubolong is the beating heart of Canggu — home to Old Man’s surf break and Echo Beach,
the most iconic stretch of coastline in the area. This is where the energy is highest, the
restaurant scene is most diverse, and the surf culture is most alive. The beach here is for
surfing and for sunsets — and a Canggu sunset is something every family should experience at
least once. Echo Beach at golden hour, with the surfers still in the water and the sky turning
orange, is one of those Bali moments that stays with you.
Batubolong and Berewa are connected by road — quick on a scooter, but by car the journey
between them can take 20 to 60 minutes depending on traffic and the time of day. However,
walking along the beach between the two takes just ten minutes at most tides. It is one of those
Canggu details that locals know and visitors often discover too late.
Pererenan
Beyond Batubolong lies Pererenan village — quieter, more local in feel, and where many of
Canggu’s long-term expat families have put down roots. It is connected to the main Canggu
areas most easily by scooter on small back roads. Pererenan has a genuinely residential,
community feel — less tourist infrastructure but a warmth and authenticity that families who find
it tend to love. If you want rice fields still on your doorstep and a slower pace of life while
remaining connected to everything Canggu offers, Pererenan is worth considering.
And Beyond — Outer Canggu
Further north again lie the villages of Seseh and Cemagi — what we call Outer Canggu. This is
Bali at its most peaceful and unspoiled. Rice fields, black sand beaches, very little traffic, and a
level of seclusion that is increasingly rare on the island. We have a small collection of villas out

Not Just a Party Spot — Canggu is a Wellness Mecca

destination. For a certain crowd at a certain hour, yes — but that is a fraction of what the area
offers. The truth is that Canggu has quietly become one of the great wellness destinations in

Padel courts, Pilates studios, world-class gyms, yoga shalas, sound healing, cold plunge,
infrared saunas — the wellness infrastructure here is genuinely impressive and growing fast.
The restaurant and cafe scene reflects it too, with menus overflowing with healthy options, high-
protein meals, smoothie bowls, and plant-based cuisine alongside everything else. Canggu attracts people who take their health seriously, and that culture has shaped the whole area in
the best possible way for families.
The Beach — Surfing and Sunsets
Canggu’s beaches are surf beaches — dramatic, black sand, with waves that are best suited to
intermediate and advanced surfers rather than young children swimming. That said, the
beaches are absolutely wonderful for watching the surf, for long walks, for building sandcastles,
and most importantly for sunsets.
A Canggu sunset is something to be experienced. The combination of the black sand, the
surfers still in the water, and the sky doing what it does over the Indian Ocean creates
something genuinely spectacular. If you do nothing else during your Canggu stay, get to the
beach at golden hour.
For families with young children who want calmer swimming conditions, Berewa Beach tends to
be slightly more sheltered and manageable than Echo Beach.
