Unpacking Greater Seminyak — A Local’s Guide to Bali’s Most Iconic Holiday Area

When most people say they are staying in Seminyak, they are actually staying in one of three
quite distinct areas — each with its own beach, its own personality, and its own reason to visit.
Understanding the difference before you arrive makes choosing the right villa significantly
easier.

Seminyak sits on Bali’s south-west coast, reached by heading west from the airport through
Kuta and then Legian before arriving in Seminyak proper. Kuta and Legian are busy, budget-
friendly holiday hubs popular with families who want easy access to Waterbom waterpark,
Beach Walk Mall, and the famous Kuta main beach. Seminyak is a genuinely different world —
quieter, more upscale, and with a polish and ease that suits families who want a more relaxed
base. The good news is that all of those Kuta and Legian attractions are easily accessible as a
day trip from central Seminyak, so you are not missing out by choosing the quieter option.
We have been living in Bali since 2008 and most of our Seminyak villas sit within the Oberoi and
Petitenget areas. Here is our honest breakdown of what makes each part of greater Seminyak
different — and how to choose the right one for your family.

The Road System — and Why the Beach is Your Best Friend

Before we get into the areas themselves, a word on getting around. Seminyak’s road system is
not efficient — what looks like a short journey on a map can take considerably longer by car or
taxi due to one-way streets, narrow lanes, and traffic. Sound familiar? It is one of those Bali
realities that catches visitors off guard.
The solution, as with Canggu, is the beach. Walking along the sand from the Oberoi area to
Batubelig takes around 15 minutes. In the other direction, from Petitenget temple down to the
Double Six area is similarly a 15-minute stroll along the sand. The beach connects greater
Seminyak beautifully — and it is a far more pleasant way to get around than sitting in a taxi.

Double Six

Named after the famous Double Six Beach, this is the liveliest and most accessible end of
Seminyak — closer to Legian and with a slightly more casual, touristy energy than the areas
further north. The beach here is wonderful for families — wide, with beanbags and umbrellas for
hire, perfect for a relaxed morning or sunset hang out with the kids. It is a great place to visit for
a beach day but not where we tend to place families for an extended stay. Better to visit than to
stay, as we like to say.

Oberoi

Oberoi is the heart of Seminyak and — for families — the most walkable and well-equipped of
the three areas. This is where Eat Street is located, the famous strip of restaurants, cafes, and
boutiques that Seminyak is known for. Shopping here is more fixed-price and air-conditioned
boutique than market haggling, which suits families who want a relaxed browse rather than a
negotiation. KuDeTa — home to the famous KuDeTa Kids Day — is in this area, making it a
great base for families who want that iconic Seminyak beach club experience. Most of our
Seminyak villa collection sits within the Oberoi area.

Petitenget

Petitenget stretches from the beachfront Petitenget Temple — one of Bali’s most photographed
and spiritually significant sites — curving slightly inland with its own distinct charm. It is a little
more residential and less immediately commercial than Oberoi, with a quieter energy that suits
families who want proximity to everything without being in the thick of it. Petitenget is home to
Bodyworks, one of Bali’s most beloved spas, and Da Maria, one of the best restaurants on the
island. La Luciola, the stunning beachfront restaurant perfect for a long family lunch, sits on the
border of Petitenget and Oberoi. Many of our most popular family villas are in this area.

Batubelig — The Bridge Between Seminyak and Canggu

At the northern end of greater Seminyak lies a small stretch of beach and suburb called
Batubelig — a transitional zone that bridges the Oberoi area with Berewa, which marks the
beginning of Canggu. It is a quiet, in-between area with its own charm, and a useful reference
point for understanding how the two great holiday zones of South Bali connect. If you are
walking the beach from Seminyak towards Canggu, Batubelig is where one world begins to give
way to the other.

What Makes Seminyak Work for Families

Seminyak’s greatest strength for families is its walkability — particularly in the Oberoi area.
Good footpaths, a concentration of restaurants and cafes within easy reach, and the beach
always close by make it genuinely easy to navigate with strollers, prams, and groups of all ages.
The beach at Seminyak is better for swimming with young children than Canggu's surf beaches
— the conditions are calmer and more manageable for little ones. Double Six Beach in
particular is a lovely family spot for a morning or a sunset.
The dining scene is world class. From casual family lunches at La Luciola to the boutique
restaurant strip along Eat Street, Seminyak has some of the best food in Bali at every price point. KuDeTa Kids Day is a Seminyak institution that families plan their holidays around — and
the colourful art markets are always a hit with kids and grandparents alike.
And while Seminyak is your base, the wider south Bali attractions are all within easy reach.
Waterbom, Beach Walk Mall, and Kuta main beach are a short drive away for a day out, and the
beach clubs and clifftop venues of the Bukit Peninsula are easily accessible for a day trip too.

Which Area of Seminyak is Right for Your Family?

Our honest steer: Oberoi and Petitenget are where we place most of our families — and for
good reason. Both areas offer the full Seminyak experience with the comfort and ease that
makes a family holiday genuinely relaxing. The right choice between the two usually comes
down to the villa rather than the area.

Our Honest Bottom Line

Seminyak rewards families who understand it. Once you know the difference between Double
Six, Oberoi, and Petitenget — and once you know to use the beach rather than the roads to get
around — it becomes one of the most enjoyable and easy holiday bases in Bali.
